Jet2.com has entered a brand new Boeing 737-800 New Generation aircraft into service for its flight to Budapest. The Leeds-based British low cost carrier, whose flights have been operating with a 90% load factor since December, pressed the Boeing 737-800, the latest member of the world’s largest mass-produced family of airliners, into scheduled service yesterday.
This version of the Boeing 737-800 ordered by Jet2.com accommodates a total of 189 passengers. Earlier, the airline flew its older, 737-300 Classic type aircraft to Budapest, which seated 148 passengers. Due to the ever-increasing demand, the low cost carrier decided to allocate the first larger capacity aircraft entered into service this year for its flight to the Hungarian capital.
Jet2.com has so far been operating a flight between Budapest and Manchester in the north of England. As of April, however, it will launch a new flight between Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, and Ferihegy. (Earlier, Irish low cost carrier Ryanair operated a flight between Glasgow and Budapest, but discontinued it last fall.)
According to preliminary plans, Jet2.com will initially commute between Edinburgh and Budapest four times a week. Experts from Budapest Airport and Jet2.com negotiated about the launch of the flight for a long period of time, before the Hungarian National Tourism Organization also joined in the last phase of the talks, and contributed to the launch of the route by providing support from the Air Marketing Fund.
Jet2.com’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft is not only capable of transporting more passengers, it is also more advanced. Thanks to its fuel-efficient engines, its emissions are significantly lower, and its kerosene consumption per passenger is also much better. Thanks to the so-called winglets fitted to the end of the wings, the drag created by the aircraft has been further reduced, resulting in an additional 1.5-2 % reduction in fuel consumption.
