Tanghekou Scenic Area
Route 1: Downtown -- Huairou County Seat -- Tanghekou Town
Feature: Scenic spots in chain
Drive towards the northeast from Sanyuanqiao, and then turn to the north after arriving at Kuliushu Roundabout via Sunhe, and you will arrive at the county seat of Huairou after a drive of 90 minutes or so. Then drive northwards along Beijing-Fengning Highway for about 10 minutes, you will see the scenic spot chain on both sides of the highway after passing by Yanqi Roundabout. The distribution order of the scenic spots is Yanqi Lake, Qinglong Gorge, Baiquan Mountain, Shimen Mountain, Ziyun Mountain, Yougushentan, Yunmengshan National Forest Park and Tianyuan Yunmeng Mountain, among which Qinglong Gorge has magnificent landscapes with rich structures, Baiquan Mountain and Shimen Mountain have unique views on the top and beautiful scenery at the foot, and Ziyun Mountain has crowded hills and thick forests filled with wildness, they all can bring new sight-seeing experiences to tourists.
Comments: There are holiday resorts and restaurants near the entrance of the above-mentioned scenic spots. In addition, there are peasant hotels along the highway from Yanqi Lake to Tanghekou (this section is a second-class highway of the mountainous area with a distance of 30 kilometers or so and it takes about 50 minutes by car), so it is very convenient for both board and lodging.
Lianquanxianggu Scenic Spot
Route 2: Downtown -- Huairou County Seat --Shentangyu Scenic Area -- Lianquanxianggu
Feature: Eating rainbow trouts
The first half of the route is the same as that of the above-mentioned one, but you need to turn to the west after arriving at Yanqi Roundabout, and then drive towards the northwest along the asphalt highway in the mountainous area. You can enjoy green mountains and valleys, dense forests and clear rivers on both sides of the highway; meanwhile, various rainbow trout ponds (of game restaurants) and holiday villages can be found everywhere, it is convenient for tourists to stop by for both board and lodging.
Comments: The sightseeing highlights of this route lie in the primitive and beautiful Shentangyu scenic area and two famous holiday villas respectively named “Shanba and “Nali", as well as the watchable Lianhuachi Holiday Resort surrounded by mountains and rivers.
Qinglianggu Scenic Resort
Route 3: Downtown -- Miyun County -- Xiwengzhuang --Qinglianggu
Feature: Surrounded by mountains and rivers
It takes about 2 hours by car from the downtown to the county seat of Miyun via Huairou. After arriving at the county seat, turn to the north and drive for 15 minutes to get to Xiwengzhuang Intersection under the dam of the reservoir, then turn left and you can arrive at the scenic area. The whole section is a second-class highway of the mountainous area with tall and shady lombardy poplars on both sides. The Scenic spots that you will pass by are successively Wuzuolou Forest Park, Yunmeng Valley, Taoyuanxiangu Valley, Jiudaowan Bay, Heilongtan Lake, Jingdongdiyipu Fall, Jinglinggu Valley and Qinglianggu Valley, among which Taoyuanxiangu Valley and Wuzuolou Forest Park are more special.
Comments: You can enjoy the full view of Miyun Reservoir to the east along the south section of the route and the scenery of Baihe Valley along the north section; moreover, both board and lodging are at your will since there are farm hotels in the villages on both sides of the mountain roads.
Yesanpo Scenic Area
Route 4: Downtown -- Shidu Scenic Area -- Yesanpo Scenic Area
Feature: beautiful landscapes
Drive along Beijing-Shijiazhuang Expressway from the downtown until arriving at Liulihe Intersection, then turn to the west and drive for about 2.5 hours to get to Shidu, and then turn to the southwest at Jiudu Intersection, and it will take 1 hour more to arrive at Yesanpo via Pudu Mountain Villa and Donghugang Scenic Area. Though Shidu is a traditional scenic sport around Beijing, it has become more enticing now. The scene in Qinglinshan Scenic Spot developed in recent years is fairly magnificent.
Comments: The highway from Shidu to Yesanpo is a third-class asphalt road of the mountainous area, with high mountains and deep valleys on the riverside of Jumahe River on the way. It is very pleasurable to cross mountains and valleys by self-driving.
Guanting Reservoir Dam
Route 5: Downtown -- Donghuayuan Town -- Guanting Reservoir Dam
Feature: various kinds of scenery
Drive to the north along the Badaling Expressway from the downtown for an hour, and you will get to the Donghuayuan Intersection, then turn to the southwest and drive for 10 minutes to get to Donghuayuan Holiday Resort for board and lodging. Then go on to drive to the southwest for 5 minutes to arrive at Tianmo Scenic Area and another 15 minutes to get to the largest grape plantation in Asia, then drive for 30 minutes to go to Guanting Reservoir Dam.
Comments: You can enjoy the full view of the reservoir from afar, taste aquatic products of the reservoir and take part in drifting along Yongdinghe Valley.
Diaowo Folk Village
Route 6: Downtown—Pinggu County—Diaowo Folk Village
Feature: a village amidst overlaid peaks and zigzag roads
It takes you about 2 hours by car from the downtown to the county seat of Pinggu via Shunyi District, then drive to the east until you get to the intersection of Jingdong Great Stalactite Cave after going out of the county seat, and then turn to the north and pass by Huangsongyu Reservoir, then you will arrive at Diaowo, a village popular with tourists for its folk custom. There are dozens of farm houses providing board and lodging for tourists in the village.
Comments: There are three large-scale scenic areas, Hudongshui, Shilin Gorge and Feilonggu Valley in the surroundings, among which Feilonggu Valley is the most suitable for self-driving since there is a highway leading to the peak though few people pay a visit due to the high mountain and dense forest.
Dajue Temple
Route 7: Dajue Temple -- sightseeing along Jingmi Diversion Canal -- flying kites at Taoyukou Reservoir
There are quite a number of people visiting Dajue Temple at this time, and you can climb Jiufeng Mountain nearby first. Drive to the east along Beijing-Miyun Diversion Canal while you can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way and you will get to Taoyukou Reservoir.
Time: 1 day is enough.
Route: turn left to the west under the overbridge at the Bei’anhe exit along the Badaling Expressway, and go straight to the end, then turn left and you can see Dajue Temple with a guidepost. There are cherry orchards everywhere on the way and you can flexibly choose the scenic spot combination.
Cost: RMB 30 yuan for the expressway toll of a round trip per vehicle; about RMB 60 yuan for the oil cost of a round trip; RMB 15 yuan for the scenic spot ticket per person, without any other costs except for board, for example, dinner excluded.
Jiankou Great Wall
Route 8: Climb Jiankou Great Wall to enjoy the magnificent and terrific scenery
Huairou -- Jiankou Great Wall
Jiankou Great wall ("Jiankou in Chinese means “Arrow Nock gets its name for the whole section of the Great Wall presents the shape of “W like a full-bent bow with the collapsed ridge opening as its arrow nock. Around Xizhazi Village in Badaohe Township of Huairou County spread Zhenbeilou Tower, Jiankou Great Wall and Yingfeidaoyang Cliff from the east to the west, and then to the west gather three sections of the Great Wall from different directions, with Jiuyanlou Tower in the north. It connects to Mutianyu Scenic Area in the east and joins Huanghuacheng Great Wall in the west while being separated with Dazhenyu Great Wall in Xiangshuihu Scenic Area only by a mountain.
Driving route: Start from Sanyuanqiao, drive along the Beijing- Miyun Expressway and turn left at the open roundabout, go on driving and then turn right at the T-shaped intersection, turn left after you get to Yanqi Roundabout and then go straight, finally you will get to the destination. The whole journey is about 80 kilometers and the road condition is good; however, it is not recommended to drive too fast due to heavy traffic and a lot of villages along Beijing-Miyun Expressway. There are quite a lot of gas stations on the way, but you’d better choose the ones directly subject to management of Sinopec or CNPC, where fuel being supplied will be of a reliable quality.
Suggestions: It is painstaking to surmount Jiankou Great Wall and you can hardly succeed without sufficient preparation and physical strength; besides, it is not suitable to stay overnight on the mountain in this season. You can enjoy the famous rainbow trouts in Huairou and fresh farm dishes in many places on the way to Jiankou Great Wall.
Baihuashan MountainRoute 9: Baihuashan Mountain (Zhenzhuhu Lake) -- Tibet Research Institution -- an unknown valley
It is both boring and tiring to climb the bald Lingshan Mountain while it is interesting to climb Baihuashan Mountain; though it is also tiring, you can enjoy beautiful flowers on the way. There is a Tibet museum at the foot of Lingshan Mountain, which is established by Teacher Xu Fengxiang who is engaged in studying alpine plants in Tibet. You can visit it free of charge and acquire the knowledge about Tibet. Besides, there is an unknown valley to the north of Zhenzhuhu Intersection, and you can enjoy the beautiful scenery for free since it is not subject to the scenic spot.
Time: 1 ~ 2 days.
Route: Drive along from West 3rd, 4th or 5th Ring Road of Beijin, then drive onto Fushi Road and then to the west with guideposts on the way.
Costs: The ticket price of Baihuashan Mountain is not known for sure. It will take you at least RMB 100 yuan for oil costs and RMB 20 ~ 30 yuan to have meals per person.
Panshan Mountain
Route 10: Enjoy natural and beautiful scenery when visiting Panshan Mountain
Jixian County, Tianjin -- Panshan Mountain
Panshan Mountain Scenic Area lies in Jixian County of Tianjin, 15 kilometers northwest to the county seat, which has the reputation of “No. 1 Mountain to the East of Beijing since it magnificently lies to the east of Beijing. It has an area of 106 square kilometers and there are many scenic spots, including such natural sceneries as “Five Peaks (Guayue Peak, Zilai Peak, Zigai Peak, Jiuhua Peak and Wujian Peak), “Eight Stones (Xuankong Stone, Yaodong Stone, Liangjia Stone, Jiangjun Stone, Jiamu Stone, Tianjing Stone, Hama Stone and Mang Stone) and “Three Spiral Positions (pine resort in the upper spiral position, stone resort in the middle spiral position and water resort in the lower spiral position), and such ancient architectures as Tiancheng Temple, Wansong Temple, Yunzhao Temple and the Stupa. The st1:PlaceName>Five Peaks echo with Wutaishan Mountain in Jiangxi Province, which endows it with the name of st1:place>Wutaishan Mountain in the east You can also visit such scenic areas as Huangyaguan Great Wall, Dule Temple, Jiulongshan Mountain, etc.
Traveling route
South line: Start from Bawangfen in Beijing, and drive along the Beijing-Tongzhou Expressway and then the Beijing-Harbin Expressway to get to the county seat of Jixian via the county seat of Sanhe.
North line: Start from East 3rd Ring Road of Beijing, drive along Beijing-Shunyi Highway and turn to drive along Shunyi-Pinggu Highway via Shunyi District, and go straight via Jinhaihu Lake to Wangzhuangqiao Bridge in LuoZhuangzi Township of Jixian County, and then turn right and drive along Tianjin-Weichang Highway until you get to the county seat of Jixian. The whole journey is 88 kilometers long and the road condition is very good; however, the mountain road is narrow when having passed by Jinhaihu Lake, you'd better control your speed. The gradient of the mountain road in Panshan Mountain Scenic Area is heavy while there are also farm vehicles passing by, so you have to drive carefully.
Suggestions: Panshan Mountain Scenic Area has a comparatively large area, so you’d better arrange a two-day journey. There are cheap hotels nearby for lodging.
Route 11: Take a fresh breath while visiting Fenghuangling Natural Park
Fenghuangling -- Yangfang Town -- Dajue Temple
Fenghuangling Natural Scenic Spot of Beijing is located within the jurisdiction of Niegezhuang Township of Haidian District, Beijing City, 33 kilometers away from Tian'anmen Square and it has an area of 17.88 square kilometers. It is reputed as a st1:PlaceName>Small Yellow Mountain in the west of Beijing The natural scenery such as green mountains, peculiar stones, dense forests and clear springs in the scenic spot echoes with such the historical relics as temples, inscriptions, pagodas and pilgrimage roads. There are three routes to visit Fenghuangling, respectively the north route, the intermediate route and the south route. You can enjoy running springs, plunging waterfalls, pagodas and caves along the north route, and Longquan Temple (one of the famous temples to the west of Beijing) and inscriptions along the intermediate route. The south route gathers various religious cultures such as Buddhism (Huangpuyuan Temple), Taoism (Lvzudong Cave) and Confucianism (Guanyu Temple).
It is about at noon when having left Fenghuangling, and you can drive to the north for no more than 10 kilometers, where you can taste genuine “instant-boiled meat of Yangfang Then drive back towards the downtown after having the feast and it takes you no more than half an hour to get to Dajue Temple, which is also a famous temple to the west of Beijing.

Route 12: Visit Cuandixia Village while going to Baihuashan Mountain to pursue pleasure

After lunch, go back to the G109 National Highway and go forward for several minutes, where you will see a fork road with a road mark at the intersection, choose the left road to continue driving along the G109 National Highway (the right road leads to Cuandixia Village); after driving for 8 minutes, you will see a gas station along the highway with a garage beside it, go on driving for 2 minutes and you will see the People’s Government of Qingshui Town, choose the left road when you see a fork road after 1 minute (see the road mark, the left road leads to “Baihuashan Mountain" while the right road leads to “Longmenjian , then turn left at the Shuangta Intersection after 5 minutes and drive into the area of Baihuashan Mountain (There is a road mark for “Baihuashan Mountain Nature Reserve at the intersection, and the right road leads to “Lingshan Mountain , and you will pass by the road mark for “Tahe Village (There is a public toilet for tourists on the left hand) after 4 minutes, go forward for 30 minutes and you will see the toll station of “Baihuashan Mountain Scenic Area where there is a fork road, choose the left road and you can go up the mountain (Tips: Drive carefully in the last five minutes when you drive along the last 5-kilometer-long winding road since there are many sharp turns and some clastic rocks on the road side.).
Go down the mountain along the same route, and you can get out of the Baihuashan Mountain Scenic Area (with a board on which it reads “Welcome to Come to Baihuashan Mountain Scenic Area Again as the mark) after about 25 minutes, then turn left at the intersection and go towards “Cuandixia Village for about 6 minutes, and you will see a banner of "Welcome to Cuandixia Village which indicates that you have arrived at Cuandixia Village.
Day 2: Go back to the downtown of Beijing along the same route from Cuandixia Village after lunch, and you will pass by the People’s Government of Qingshui Town after 15 minutes, then choose the left road when you see a road mark for “Xiashudian at a fork road (Tips: The right road leads to Wangping Area), then go on to drive along the G109 National Highway after going through the tunnel; after a while, you will see a road mark for “Miaofengshan Mountain on the right hand of the road, and go forward for about 10 minutes and then turn left at the intersection of “Longquan Hotel to drive onto Shimen Road first, then go back to Dinghuisi Bridge along Fushi Road. (Tips: If you have enough time, you can visit the surrounding scenic spots near Cuandixia Village such as Lingshan Mountain and Huangcaoliang; on the way to Cuandixia Village on the first day, you can climb Miaofengshan Mountain.)

Parking lots: There is a parking lot in Baihuashan Mountain Scenic Area and there is another parking lot at Cuandixia Village.
Cuandixia Village: Cuandixia Village is an ancient mountain village maintaining the styles of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties, and it gets its name for it is located below “Cuanli’ankou (a military pass in the Ming Dynasty). Since the character “cuan () is too complicated for writing, people replace it with (reading “chuan for short in many places now.
The whole village is orientated south and surrounded by mountains, with 76 quadrangle courtyards and more than 600 rooms well preserved. The rooms are well-structured and spaced while the quadrangle courtyards are made of excellent workmanship and in good order. The architectural styles of the stone walls, delicate gate piers, distinctive screen walls and the brick, stone and wood carvings not only reflect the charm of the water towns in the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River but also reflect the magnificentness of the high and grand residences in the North.
